Setting a new benchmark in scientific instrument value, Varian, Inc. (Nasdaq:VARI) today introduced its model 1200L Liquid Chromatograph/Mass Spectrometer (LC/MS) that can be uniquely configured to meet a customer's specific analytical requirements. The new system is available as a triple-quadrupole or as a single-quadrupole MS that can later be upgraded to triple-quadrupole. In addition, both configurations allow the user to switch from LC/MS to GC/MS (gas chromatography/mass spectrometry), and back, with a simple interface change.

Mass spectrometry is a highly selective and sensitive, interference-free instrument technique used to identify compounds, even those in the most difficult-to-analyze samples. The error-free results produced by MS are particularly critical for pharmaceutical, life science, toxicology, and environmental laboratories. The LC/MS technique is of growing importance to life science researchers who value its ability to identify the large, polar, and non-volatile molecules so common to biological samples. The complementary GC/MS technique is used for identifying small, volatile and semi-volatile compounds.

"In developing the 1200L LC/MS, we studied how best to apply our core MS, GC, and LC capabilities for solving the actual needs of today's marketplace," said Garry Rogerson, senior vice president of Scientific Instruments, Varian, Inc. "We found that in addition to being cost sensitive, laboratory managers were frustrated by the either/or choices they had to make. Current offerings forced them to buy GC/MS or LC/MS, single quad or triple quad.

"By taking a completely different design approach with the 1200L MS, we are providing an affordable, research-grade, single-quad instrument that sets new standards for sensitivity and selectivity. At the same time, customers have the flexibility to switch to the analytical capabilities of GC/MS or upgrade to triple-quad LC/MS/MS as their needs dictate," continued Rogerson.

Highly selective and sensitive mass spectrometry depends on obtaining the greatest number of charged ions from the sample and doing so with the least amount of background noise. Every feature of the Varian 1200L MS -- from the quadrupole mass analyzers to the off-axis multiplier to the interface that introduces samples from the LC to the MS -- have been designed for maximizing ion transmission while minimizing background chemical noise.

Varian's 1200L computer workstation speeds method development, directs the analysis of each sample, executes all computations, and generates custom reports. The workstation software also facilitates compliance with Good Laboratory Practice (GLP) regulatory requirements.

The Varian 1200L MS is available for delivery in May 2002.
