Large molecule-based compounds comprise 27% of today’s pharmaceutical development pipeline with significant growth forecast for the future. In addition, many biomarkers are endogenously present in large, or macro, molecules. Immunoassays are the preferred bioanalytical technique for the quantitative determination of macro-molecules in biological samples. Immunoassay techniques are also important to the investigation of immunogenicity for large-molecule therapeutics. Advion now provides immunoassay services to support PK, biomarker, and immunogenicity studies of macro-molecule drug development programs. As with all of our services, we are committed to providing immunoassay services with scientific excellence and premier customer service. Under the management oversight of Stephen Lowes, Ph.D., our immunoassay services are led by Esmé Farley, Ph.D. and Byron Simpson, respected scientists with over 20 years combined experience with
immunochemistry and GLP procedures.

Our immunoassay laboratory is located in Northern Virginia. Near Dulles airport, the
laboratory is convenient for clients wishing to make site visits. The laboratory is fully
operational with SOPs, validated systems, and ongoing GLP studies. We offer method
development, validation, and sample analysis services in a fully equipped modern bioanalytical laboratory. In addition, Advion is happy to collaborate to create novel assays and work with clients on technical transfer of developed assays. For more information about Advion’s newest service offering, email info@advion.com.

Success with Immunoassays

There are many variables affecting the performance of an immunoassay and a great deal
of skill is required in developing rugged and reliable assays. It's a very different skill set than is required for chromatography-based assays such as LC/MS. Success often relies on being able to obtain and characterize the quality of antibody reagents, and then use them in a controlled fashion such that validated methods can be relied on to produce accurate and precise results. Scientific excellence, strict attention to detail, timeliness, and flexibility stay constant as with all of our services.

Bioanalytical Outsourcing - What factors affect outsourcing decisions?

Stephen Lowes, PhD
SVP, Scientific

In the feature article of Contract Pharma's November/December 2007 issue, Steve Lowes, Advion's senior vice president, scientific, and Anthony J. DeStefano, a principal scientist at
Proctor & Gamble Pharmaceuticals, discuss the many factors associated with
bioanalytical outsourcing - The core of Advion's business for the past 15 years.
Outsourcing strategies are currently being explored by almost all companies
involved in drug discovery and development. The article discusses why
a pharmaceutical or biotechnology company chooses to outsource, then
describes the four main drivers that need to be researched and managed; Capability, Capacity, Cost, and Communication. It is important to appreciate the details of the science
and regulatory requirements to have a successful outcome from these relationships. The article places strong emphasis on two-way communication, and concludes with some guidance on how to achieve this. The full article is a v a i l a b l e on l i n e a t

Advion Expands with State-of-the-Art Bioanalytical Equipment

As Advion expands its service offerings, it continues to invest and to expand its core
bioanalytical LC/MS/MS service with the recent acquisition of two API 5000 and one API 4000 mass spectrometers as well as a Waters Acquity UPLC system. Advion has also acquired a new Bruker HCT Ultra ion trap mass spectrometer. Along with the instrument acquisitions, Advion has hired additional scientific staff.

With a total of 25 triple quadrupole mass spectrometers in its Ithaca, NY laboratory,
Advion is one of the world's largest bioanalytical contract laboratories.

The addition of the API 5000, API 4000, HCT Ultra and Acquity UPLC systems provides Advion's scientists with technology to meet the needs of its clients for LC/MS/MS assays with improved sensitivity. Not only does this new equipment improve its capability, but in combination with the recent expansion of scientific staff provides Advion with increased state-of-the-art bioanalytical capacity.
