Advion, Inc., a leading systems and consumables developer for the life sciences industry, has launched the the expressionE compact mass spectrometer (CMS). Created specifically for global education institutions interested in providing industry-relevant, hands-on mass spectrometry experience at an affordable price point, the expressionE delivers tailored performance, versatile sample introduction systems, and a clear, easy-to-follow, complete curriculum with a lecture and video series created by Jack Henion, PhD, an expert in mass spectrometry and co-inventor of the modern ion-spray technique.

The United States is home to more than 600 undergraduate chemistry programs recognized by the American Chemical Society (ACS), and many are small private institutions, creating challenging funding environments for expensive analytical equipment. Advion has not only priced the expressionE at an affordable price, but also created an academic teaching “kit” including the most desirable chemistry, biochemistry or medicinal chemistry program features: a single quadrupole mass spectrometer, computer, training, choice of interfaces, and an easy-to-follow video and lecture curriculum.

The expressionE offers unrivaled student and faculty flexibility and versatility, enabling users to learn various sample introduction techniques including manual injection and liquid chromatography (LC). Unique to the CMS is the direct analysis probe (ASAP®), whereby students simply dip the probe into their reaction mixture and insert the probe into the mass spectrometer for immediate analysis without additional sample preparation. Or by using the Plate Express TLC/CMS interface, students can analyze a developed TLC plate without the need for scraping spots.

“Advion strives to deliver instruments specific to the chemist’s needs and we have long been aware of the need for a robust, simple mass spectrometer in chemistry teaching laboratories. The expressionE and course curriculum were created with input from a number of academic users who have a need for both the lab-based assays and the lecture course”, comments Simon Prosser, Vice President of Marketing. “We see the ability to provide hands-on, industry relevant training with mass spectrometers capable of directly analyzing liquid samples as a huge benefit to any undergraduate or graduate degree program.”

Attendees at the American Society for Mass Spectrometry (ASMS) Annual Meeting in Saint Louis, MO will have the opportunity to get a glimpse of the slide presentation and videos at Advion’s booth number 171.
