Continuing to emphasize metabolomics tools, Agilent Technologies Inc. (NYSE: A) today introduced the Agilent Fiehn Metabolomics Retention Time Locked (RTL) Library for gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS). It is the first commercially available mass spectral library for the identification of metabolites found in metabolomic studies.

The Agilent Fiehn Metabolomics RTL Library was developed by Agilent in conjunction with Oliver Fiehn, Ph.D., a preeminent metabolomics scientist. In addition to providing a high degree of confidence in metabolite identification, the library contains pre-programmed methods to further facilitate analyses.

"Because this is a commercial offering by Agilent, researchers can be confident in the results they get from data searches," said Steve Fischer, Agilent product manager, Metabolomics. "Also, the library is retention indexed, which will facilitate comparisons with private metabolite libraries. This is the most complete metabolite library commercially available, and users can be confident that this tool will remain up-to-date for years to come."

Results from data processing using the Agilent Fiehn library can be imported into Agilent's GeneSpring MS bioinformatics software for mass spectrometry, enabling the rapid comparison of large data sets for discovery of metabolite biomarkers.

The library complements the Agilent METLIN personal metabolite database used for metabolomics analysis by liquid chromatography/mass spectrometry, developed in 2007 exclusively for Agilent customers in cooperation with Mass Consortium Corp. Agilent is committed to developing new and innovative solutions to facilitate metabolomics research and the Fiehn library is an example of that commitment.
