Today, the launch of the Bremen Mass Spectrometry Seminar, an open seminar with monthly invited talks on mass spectrometry covering both technology and applications, is announced. The seminar is run by seven local organizers representing academia and industry (listed at the end of the press release). The aim of the Seminar is to establish a discussion and networking platform in the Bremen/Oldenburg region and to strengthen the reputation of Bremen as the capital of mass spectrometry.

Mass spectrometry is a versatile and ubiquitous analytical technique that can reveal the molecular composition of a sample by analyzing molecular weights of molecules contained in the sample. Mass spectrometry is an essential tool in biology and medicine enabling metabolomics, lipidomics, peptidomics, and proteomics analysis for various applications. The astonishing progress in mass spectrometry in the last decades has been achieved by joint and coordinated efforts in various fields of science and technology: physics, engineering, chemistry, biology, medicine, and bioinformatics.

The city of Bremen, Germany, has a unique standing in the field of mass spectrometry – it hosts two major mass spectrometry vendors, Bruker Daltonics and Thermo Fisher Scientific – that facilitates mass spectrometry research and applications, enables first-hand access to cutting-edge technologies for local teams, and attracts visitors from all over the world. This fruitful environment has recently resulted in establishing several mass spectrometry oriented research groups and companies in the Bremen/Oldenburg metropolitan region.

Our commitment is to attract top-level speakers in mass spectrometry to Bremen and to create a welcoming atmosphere for every participant. Talks will take place at the Max Planck Institute for Marine Microbiology on the 3rd Wednesday of each month, starting at 16:00 followed by an informal wine and cheese reception. The opening inaugural talk will be given on 16th October 2013 by Prof. Pieter Dorrestein, Director of the Therapeutic Discovery Mass Spectrometry Center and Co-Director of the Institute for Metabolomics Medicine at University of California – San Diego.

Seminar Organizers:

Theodore Alexandrov (University of Bremen / SCiLS GmbH / SCiLS Research / University of California – San Diego), Nicole Dubilier (Max Planck Institute for Marine Microbiology Bremen), Peter Spiteller (University of Bremen), Nikolai Kuhnert (Jacobs University), Thorsten Dittmar (University of Oldenburg / Max Planck Institute for Marine Microbiology Bremen), Detlev Suckau (Bruker Daltonics), and Alexander Makarov (Thermo Fisher Scientific).
