A high performance ion mobility spectrometer (HPIMS™) that easily integrates with Thermo Scientific™ Orbitrap™ mass spectrometers provides deep insight into the analysis of complex samples.

Excellims, a world leader and innovator in chemical detection by ion mobility spectrometry, announces an exciting new product - the MA3100 high performance ion mobility pre-separator for mass spectrometers. This powerful addition to Excellims' series of top-of-the-line IMS instruments has been built to interface with multiple mass spectrometer product lines from Thermo Fisher Scientific.

The MA3100 greatly enhances mass spectrometry technology by increasing versatility, simplifying complex spectra, and allowing for targeted analysis of gas phase ions that is not always possible by mass spectrometry alone; in some cases, IMS can provide HPLC-like separation in milliseconds. The HPIMS - Orbitrap MS combination delivers ultra-high-resolution separation of complex samples in both ion mobility and m/z domains, and provides vital information about the structure and identity of molecular ions. The MA3100 is exchangeable with the current ionization sources of the MS, and when installed it will be detected and controlled by the MS software in forthcoming releases.

"The HPIMS addition to the Orbitrap™-based instruments will assist our customers to selectively introduce their target ions into the mass spectrometer, and to obtain ion collision cross section information. We are excited about the experimental flexibility of this pre-separation method," said Dr. Alexander Makarov, Director of Global Research, Life Science Mass Spectrometry, Thermo Scientific.

"With great support from the Thermo Scientific team, I am pleased we could make the HPIMS available as an integrated add-on to the already powerful Orbitrap MS. Many Orbitrap MS users have been waiting for ion mobility separation to become possible on this platform. Excellims is committed to providing high performance ion mobility technology to the MS community," added Dr. Ching Wu, President and CEO of Excellims Corporation.

The unique HPIMS™ technology developed exclusively at Excellims enables high resolution separation to be attained that has not been possible on previously existing systems. Routinely performing separations with a resolving power of 70+, HPIMS™ is an ideal tool for numerous applications in the pharmaceutical, food, and biotech industries. When combined with other techniques such as mass spectrometry or liquid chromatography, it can add a whole new dimension of separation to a facility's analytical capabilities.

The MA3100 joins Excellims' diverse line of HPIMS™ instruments, which includes the GA2100 (a robust and fieldable standalone ion mobility system for rapid on-site analysis), the IA3100 (an integrated HPLC-HPIMS system), and the RA4100 research HPIMS-MS, combining a single quadrupole mass spectrometer with an integrated ion mobility drift tube.

Excellims' instruments are used throughout the world for a wide range of manufacturing, research, and security applications including pharmaceutical cleaning validation, reaction monitoring, quality control, food safety testing, and detection of explosives, counterfeit drugs, and controlled substances.

Excellims will be introducing the MA3100 and showcasing HPIMS™ technology at the American Society for Mass Spectrometry (ASMS) conference at the Baltimore Convention Center from June 15 - 19, 2014.
