New Solutions and Applications Help Laboratories Enhance Productivity and Meet Increasingly Stringent Regulatory Requirements

Salt Lake City, Utah. - Thermo Fisher Scientific Inc., the world leader in serving science, today announced powerful liquid chromatography - tandem mass spectrometry (LC/MS/MS) food safety testing solutions and applications to help laboratories meet increasingly stringent monitoring requirements, simplify analyses and boost productivity. The solutions and applications will be displayed at the Salt Palace Convention Center Salons 250BCEF, May 24 - May 26, 2010 during the ASMS Conference on Mass Spectrometry and Allied Topics in Salt Lake City, Utah.

Increasing food safety concerns have resulted in more stringent global regulations for the detection of contaminants worldwide. This is especially true in Europe(EU) and Japan, where regulations for pesticides are now among the strictest, with maximum residue levels (MRLs) allowed in food products set at 10 ppb for most compounds. At the same time, the number of regulated contaminants has grown considerably. As a result, labs must quickly and accurately screen and quantitate a growing number of contaminants in extremely complex matrices at increasingly lower levels. These trends are driving the need for more sensitive, fast and cost-effective LC/MS and LC/MS/MS solutions.

Thermo Scientific TraceFinder speeds method development

TraceFinder* software has preconfigured methods and report formats that make screening for
routine contaminants simple, fast and cost-effective. TraceFinder software prompts users through the steps to create screening or targeted selected reaction monitoring (SRM) methods, reducing method development time. Unique structural confirmation and library matching enables TraceFinder to confirm and quantitate hundreds of compounds in a single experiment, dramatically increasing throughput.

Thermo Scientific TSQ Series triple stage quadrupole mass spectrometers meet lower MRLs

The TSQ Series triple stage quadrupole mass spectrometry systems are among the most advanced and powerful triple quadrupole systems available commercially. All feature the patented Thermo Scientific HyperQuad quadrupole mass analyzer system, capable of performing highly selective reaction monitoring (H-SRM) which provides greater analytical selectivity and sensitivity to help meet lower detection limits.

The Thermo Scientific TSQ Quantum Access MAX MS is based on the proven TSQ platform and features a mass range of m/z 10 to 3,000. The system can perform up to 3,000 H-SRM acquisitions per run, enabling a higher tolerance for precursor ion selection for quantitative assays. The instrument's high-speed positive/negative switching at 25 ms enables multi-residue screening in a single analytical run.

Thermo Scientific Transcend system automates sample preparation

Transcend* provides an independent, parallel, multi-channel ultra-high pressure liquid chromatography (U-HPLC) system that combines online sample preparation and multidimensional chromatography to boost laboratory throughput. Its patented Thermo Scientific TurboFlow technology is an automated, online sample preparation technology which makes it possible to inject samples directly into the LC-MS. It uses principles of diffusion, chemistry and size exclusion to eliminate matrix interferences and reduce ion suppression while capturing target analytes. It saves time by eliminating complex sample preparation protocols so the same sample preparation method can be used with a variety of different matrices.

New Thermo Scientific workflows that bring together Transcend with TurboFlow technology and powerful TSQ Series triple stage quadrupole MS are helping food safety testing laboratories automate sample preparation and meet lower detection limits. Thermo Scientific scientists and leading customers have developed new methods for high-throughput screening of antibiotics in milk and Bisphenol A (BPA) in infant formula. Previous methods employed lengthy, complicated extraction steps. The new methods fully automate sample preparation and detect target contaminants at low ppb levels.

Thermo Scientific Exactive with Accela* U-HPLC increases confidence in results, meets lower MRLs

The Exactive* with the Thermo Scientific Accela U-HPLC is a robust, easy-to-operate and cost-efficient LC/MS system for routine screening of pesticides. The Exactive leverages proven Thermo Scientific Orbitrap technology to deliver ultra-high-resolution (up to 100,000 FWHM) accurate-mass full-scan data that enables identification of unknowns and increases confidence in results. The Accela U-HPLC system improves chromatographic resolution, speed and sensitivity.

A new method was recently published which uses the combined Exactive and Accela system to detect 510 pesticides in food at low ppb levels in minutes. The method demonstrates excellent linearity over the range of 1-250 ppb, with correlation coefficients for the majority of pesticides greater than 0.99. Limits of quantification (LOQs) ranged from 1 - 50 ppb, and for 499 pesticides LOQs are at or below the MRL of 10 ppb imposed by EU and Japanese regulations.

Thermo Scientific EQuan MAX with Exactive automates sample preparation, increases productivity

The new EQuan MAX* is an automated, LC-MS system for the analysis of contaminants in drinking water and beverages. EQuan MAX now adds the power of Exactive's Orbitrap technology, enabling laboratories to screen for both target and non-target compounds using high resolution accurate mass (<2ppm mass accuracy) in a single analytical run. EQuan MAX can also be used with the TSQ Series of mass spectrometers.

With EQuan MAX, samples are directly injected into the LC-MS, eliminating the need for off-line sample preconcentration. Its unique online sample preparation technique reduces analysis time Its large injection volume (1-20mL) enhances system sensitivity. EQuan MAX also supports injection volumes as low as 1µL. Switching between injection volumes can be automated for overnight operation and increased productivity. Its new, compact Open Accela autosampler saves bench space and provides full compatibility with the Accela 600 HPLC and 1250 U-HPLC systems.
