-Significantly Improves Analytical Efficiency with Reduced Instrument Purchase Costs-


Shimadzu announces the release of the Nexera UC/s (SFC/UHPLC Switching System). The Nexera UC/s allows measurements by a liquid chromatograph (LC) and supercritical fluid chromatograph (SFC) on a single system. SFC requires approximately one-third the analysis time of LC so it can significantly improve analytical efficiency. LC units already installed can be upgraded to the Nexera UC/s, an upgrade that costs approximately half the price of a new SFC system.



Liquid chromatographs are widely used for analysis of optical isomers that influence side effects of drugs, residual pesticides in foods, and nutritious and functional food ingredients in the drug discovery and food industries. However, accurate measurement of components made of compounds with similar properties sometimes takes a very long time.



Supercritical fluid chromatographs enable separation of components and measurement of their content in a short time using supercritical fluid carbon dioxide that has both liquid and gas properties. They are expected to provide better separation of structural isomers with similar properties and impurity substances while consuming lower amounts of harmful organic solvents. Using a system that can perform both supercritical fluid chromatography and liquid chromatography will improve efficiency and increase productivity.

1. More Efficient and Precise Analysis Using Two Different Separation Modes

By measuring the same sample on the Nexera UC/s, components that are difficult to separate using LC can be separated more precisely with SFC due to its use of supercritical fluid carbon dioxide. This enables more efficient examination of separation conditions in measurements of optical isomers in drug discovery and nutritious and functional components in foods. The system also simplifies sample pretreatment by using supercritical fluid extraction (SFE) to extract only the target components in the sample using supercritical fluid carbon dioxide.

2. Smaller Laboratory Footprint and Lower Purchasing Costs

Since the Nexera UC/s provides two separation modes on a single system, it does not require as much space as installing two dedicated systems. A newly-released kit to upgrade an existing Nexera X2 ultra high performance liquid chromatograph to a Nexera UC/s can also be used. Costing approximately half the price of a new SFC instrument, this upgrade option provides customers with significant savings while allowing them to perform conventional analysis and SFC with one system.

The Nexera UC, an analytical system that uses supercritical fluid, was co-developed with Osaka University, Miyazaki Agricultural Research Institute, and Kobe University in a project of the Japan Science and Technology Agency. Since its release in January 2015, it has been recognized as an innovative system worldwide. The Nexera UC is now widely used in government agencies, universities, and environment-related organizations in addition to pharmaceutical and food industries.
