Shimadzu Scientific Instruments and Perfinity Biosciences Inc. have received a 2011 R&D 100 Award in the category of Analytical Instrumentation for the Perfinity Workstation. The award recognizes the Perfinity Workstation as one of the 100 most technologically significant products introduced during the past year.

The Perfinity Workstation automates protein sample preparation, allowing users to start with serum and have peptides ready for LC-MS analysis in as little as 10 minutes. In addition to a dramatic reduction in sample prep time, the system generates CV values of less than 10 percent for the overall process of affinity selection, proteolysis, and peptide assay. This automated process removes much of the equipment and manual labor associated with more common sample preparation techniques of proteins for LCMS analysis, freeing the scientist up to dedicate more time to more intellectually challenging activities.

One of the major advantages of the Perfinity Workstation's sample preparation approach is that users are not required to immobilize antibodies. Instead scientists can add antibodies directly to the sample where the complexes are formed in solution. By removing the immobilization process, users have eliminated a potential source of error, making LC-MS sample preparation with Perfinity Workstation more accurate and reliable.

Winners of the R&D 100 Awards were selected by an independent judging panel and the editors of R&D Magazine. Shimadzu and Perfinity Biosciences thank the judges for this honor. The companies will be recognized at the R&D 100 Awards Banquet on Oct. 31 in Orlando, Fla.
