Dear reader,
welcome to the 5th issue
of our free, monthly
mass spectrometry
newsletter! You will find below many interesting
mass spec
news from all over world. Probably the
two news making the headlines this month are:
The
mapping of the human proteome by ETH Zürich and ISB in Seattle
Yesterday Mass-Spec-Capital.com got the following
information with regard to the instruments used from Ruedi Aebersold:
»At ETH Zurich
we used primarily AB/SCIEX Qtrap instruments (version 4000 and 5500).
At the ISB we used primarily instruments from Agilent, specifically a
triple quadrupole and a quadrupole –TOF instrument with
chip-LC technology.«
The ETHZ, ISB and
Agilent issued press releases about this milestone, that has been
announced at the HUPO 2010 in Sydney. These press releases
can be found in our [MSC]
News section.
The MALDI Biotyper Collaboration of Bruker with
BD Diagnostics
Bruker has been
very active in placing over 150 MALDI Biotyper systems
worldwide
since launching the solution back in 2006. However, Bruker lacked
basically two things until yesterday:
1. A partner with a
strong position in the worldwide clinical diagnostics markets, like
Shimadzu
already has with bioMérieux.
2. FDA approval for
clinical use of the Biotyper that is RUO in the US.
Now Bruker
has found a partner with BD Diagnostics and both
will
work together towards getting FDA approval for the Biotyper.
Please, enjoy this month’s [MSC] Newsletter!
Kind regards
Marcus Lippold, [iito] Business Intelligence

and BD Diagnostics in Diagnostics Collaboration
Both companies collaborate to improve microbial identification and
antimicrobial susceptibility testing and will work together towards
getting FDA approval for the MALDI Biotyper solution.
Bio21
and AB SCIEX Develop Metabolomics Methods Using new 5600 TripleTOF
Anthony Purcell told Mass-Spec-Capital.com that his lab at Bio21
(University of Melbourne) is eagerly awaiting delivery of a 5600
TripleTOF instrument from AB SCIEX in early 2011. Recently the lab uses
its own QTRAP 5500 and had early access to the AB SCIEX 5600 TripleTOF
in Toronto and Foster City.
Thermo
and Proteome Sciences Combine Technologies to Find Protein Biomarkers
Both companies expand their collaboration and product integration
efforts using Proteome’s TMT reagents. In connection with
this collaboration Proteome Sciences recnently installed LTQ Orbitrap
Velos and TSQ Vantage mass spectrometer systems at its research
laboratories in Frankfurt, Germany
University
of Oldenburg, Germany, Installs €2.1m 15 Tesla FT-CIR-MS
According to the press release (in German) this is the most powerful
mass sepctrometer installed in Germany. Thorsten Dittmar, head of the
Max Planck Research Group for Marine Geochemistry, located at the
University Oldenburg in Northern Germany, told [MSC] that the
instrument is a Bruker maXis and that the research group in Oldenburg
is administered by the Max Planck Institute for Marine Microbiology in
Bremen.
