Metabolomic Discoveries GmbH. (2/3/11). "Press Release: Metabolomic Discoveries Announces Start of 1000 Metabolomes Program. Program Setup to Identify Diversity of Metabolites in Organisms, Food and Beverages".
Germany based research company Metabolomic Discoveries announces the launch of the 1000 Metabolomes Program. The analysis of the metabolomic composition of 1000 different organisms and biological products will contribute to their deeper understanding and can help improve products on aspects like flavor and quality in general. The scope of the program is broad ranging from food and beverages to medicine and cosmetics. For this program, the company cooperates with a variety of organizations and is looking for more partners. With the analyzed samples, Metabolomic Discoveries will setup an extensive compound database, which will become a valuable source of information for further research.
The quality of biological products such as fruits and vegetables strongly depend - in addition to genes - on internal metabolic processes. Those compounds, which can be sugars, amino acids, hormones and many more are responsible for flavor and nutritional value. Investigating the metabolic inventory of products are of great interest in the food and agriculture industry. Only the knowledge of the exact material composition can improve quality programs.
"We are pleased to initiate the 1000 Metabolomes Program to contribute to the overall knowledge about organisms," says Nicolas Schauer, CEO of Metabolomic Discoveries. "Until now, the biochemical composition of many organisms and biological products has been pretty much in the dark. Extensive research in the last decades was not able to shed light on the total metabolic composition of biological samples, the so called metabolome, due to lack of technology and interest. In the last decades, science focused on the description of organisms by their genome, transcriptome or proteome, but paid less attention to the metabolome. The latter, however, reflects the quality state of each organism and is closer to the phenotype than the genome, transcriptome or even proteome."
Metabolites play a crucial role in all areas of daily life, from pharmaceuticals to prevent diseases, to diets to promote health. Other examples of the importance of metabolites are taste and aroma in food and beverages, in the biomass production for biofuels and the use of nutrients in cosmetics.
Senior Scientist Martin Lehmann explains: "Today, we are able to explore at once the complete metabolite composition of any given sample. At Metabolomic Discoveries we use novel technologies like high resolution GC- and LC-MS to unravel the metabolic composition of popular food and beverages like honey, chocolate, pepper, apple, banana, coffee, beer or wine. This knowledge will help us understand and identify flavor properties and nutritional values, as well as unnatural by-products and to recognize those as contaminants."
Metabolomic research will help both the industry to focus on consumer wishes and the consumer to be sure to obtain high quality products.
