University of Massachusetts at Amherst. (6/11/10). "Press Release: Vachet Elected to American Mass Spectrometry Society Board".

In a national vote by more than 7,500 members, Richard Vachet, Chemistry, was elected to a two-year term on the board of directors of the American Society for Mass Spectrometry (ASMS). The organization represents academic, industrial and government laboratories and is the world's largest society for mass spectrometry and allied topics.

Vachet, who joins the board in July, will in take the lead in directing the society's educational activities. Each year, ASMS supports over 15 short courses on a variety of mass spectrometry-related topics serving over 700 participants. In addition, Vachet will organize the annual ASMS Fall Workshop, which provides a highly interactive tutorial on specific topics related to mass spectrometry. Finally, Vachet will lead the effort to re-publish classic books in mass spectrometry as well as expand the educational content of the society's website at www.asms.org

Mass spectrometry is a technique used by chemists, physicists, biochemists, biologists, geologists and forensic scientists to measure the precise weight of molecules. Each unique molecular weight can serve as a fingerprint, allowing scientists to identify and quantify interesting molecules, for example, drugs or environmental pollutants from almost any solid, liquid or gas source. The technique has also become nearly synonymous with proteomics, which is the large-scale study of proteins that are vital players in almost every cellular process in living organisms. This has made mass spectrometry one of the most important techniques in both drug discovery and disease diagnosis in use today.

In addition to organizing scientific meetings and short courses, ASMS board members oversee an annual meeting that attracts approximately 6,500 people each year. The society also publishes the most-cited peer-reviewed scientific journal in the field of mass spectrometry and one of the most cited in analytical chemistry.
