Bruker Daltonics, Inc.. (3/18/02). "Press Release: Bruker Daltonics Introduces Novel MALDI-Sources for Its esquire3000plus Ion Trap and BioTOF Q-q-TOF Mass Spectrometers". New Orleans, Louisiana.

Bruker Daltonics Inc. (NASDAQ: BDAL) today introduces novel atmospheric-pressure MALDI (matrix assisted laser desorption ionization) sources for its research-grade esquire3000plus ion trap and BioTOF-Q Q-q-TOF mass spectrometers.

This new MALDI source is intended for proteomics and other life-science researchers who desire medium-throughput MALDI-MS and MALDI-MS/MS capabilities at intermediate sensitivity levels. Sample plate holders are available for 64 and 96-spot configurations. Movement between spots and spiraling of the laser position on each spot for maximum signal is automated through the target positioning software. The sample position is also viewed through a CCD camera and monitor.

The MALDI source can be attached to the esquire3000plus or BioTOF-Q without breaking vacuum. Changeover between ESI and MALDI operation is quick and requires no tools. Fiber-optic coupling of the nitrogen laser eliminates laser adjustments.

A combination of MALDI peptide mass fingerprint and MS/MS sequence information is generated automatically using AutoMS/MS. The dataset is processed and searched against protein databases using our biotools™ software.

The esquire3000plus is the only commercial ion trap with 0.6 Dalton resolution over a mass range up to m/z 3000 in a single scan. For singly-charged MALDI ions, this means that the esquire3000plus is the only ion trap system on the market to provide isotopic full-scan resolution for typical tryptic peptides up to 3000 Daltons - a significant advantage for all ion trap proteomics researchers. Combined with our unique SNAP™ peak picking algorithm, isotopic resolution ensures that only the monoisotopic masses are used for protein database searching, even for larger peptides. The result is a confident, unambiguous protein assignment when searching with low mass error tolerance. The full resolution mass range of 3000 Dalton ensures that almost all tryptic peptides are detected, giving extensive sequence coverage. For high mass peptides, an extended mass range to 6000 is also available on the esquire3000plus.
