Bruker Daltonics, Inc.. (3/3/03). "Press Release: Bruker Daltonics Announces Novel High-Performance Benchtop ESI-TOF. New Research-grade Benchtop microTOF Features 2x Better Resolution and Mass Accuracy". Billerica, MA.
Bruker Daltonics Inc. (NASDAQ: BDAL) announces that it will introduce its novel microTOF(TM) electrospray ionization time-of-flight (ESI-TOF) mass spectrometer next week at PittCon 2003 in Orlando, FL. The microTOF is an innovative next-generation benchtop ESI-TOF system with higher performance for research and exacting analytical requirements. Benchtop ESI-TOF systems are typically used by the pharma/biotech industry and by academic researchers for accurate mass determination that allows the unambiguous identification of small molecules in metabolomics. Other applications include accurate mass peptide analysis, the mass determination of intact proteins, and rapid high-throughput LC/MS or CE/MS analysis.
The new microTOF is arguably the first high-performance benchtop ESI-TOF system on the market. Even though it has a smaller footprint than other benchtop ESI-TOF systems, it features approximately twice the resolution (FWHM resolution 10,000) and significantly improved mass accuracy without the need for cumbersome internal calibration and signal intensity matching. The microTOF mass accuracy sets a new performance standard in its class with routinely better than 5 ppm mass error with external calibration, and better than 3 ppm with internal calibration.
The microTOF utilizes new state-of-the-art high-speed analog-to-digital converter (ADC) technology, which in contrast to older time-to-digital converters (TDC) permits reliable quantitative measurements, and can produce high-fidelity undistorted isotopic patterns. In combination with improved mass accuracy and rugged mass stability, these capabilities can provide scientists with increased confidence in small molecule and peptide molecular formula determination, as well as intact protein identification.
The microTOF is exceptionally fast and sensitive, a key requirement for fast, high-throughput LC/MS and CE/MS analysis. It measures at acquisition rate greater than 10 kHz, which after on-the-fly signal averaging can generate 20 full spectra per second. Fast chromatography is increasingly used in the life sciences for increased throughput and sensitivity.
The microTOF, priced at US$ 200,000, further extends Bruker Daltonics' ESI-TOF mass spectrometry product line, which so far consists of the floor-standing research-grade BioTOF(TM) ESI-TOF and ESI-Q-q-TOF systems.
Frank Laukien, Ph.D., President and CEO, commented: "With the introduction of the microTOF, we are excited to enter a new segment of the life-science mass spectrometry market, namely the benchtop ESI-TOF market. Using the latest technology and some very innovative designs, we have generated a next-generation benchtop ESI-TOF system that truly fulfills the promise of this very useful technology. We believe that the microTOF will be readily accepted in the market."
