Product Product Tracer™ 5i handheld X-ray fluorescence (XRF) elemental analyzer

Bruker celebrated the 100th customer of its newly introduced TRACER 5i Handheld X-ray Fluorescence (XRF) analyzer for advanced applications and research.

Soon after launch, Pennsylvania State University purchased Bruker’s new TRACER 5i. The Roots Lab at the College of Agricultural Sciences Department of Plant Science won a $7,000,000 ARPA-E Award from the Department of Energy for DEEPER: An Integrated Phenotyping Platform for Deeper Roots. The DEEPER project is “a platform for identifying the traits of deeper-rooted crops that integrates breakthroughs in nondestructive field phenotyping of rooting depth, root modeling, high-throughput 3D imaging of root architecture and anatomy, gene discovery, and genomic selection modeling”. The grant work’s potential impact is related to improved and sustainable agricultural productivity for national security, environmental protection and for contributing to U.S. leadership in an emerging bio-economy. Bruker’s newly introduced TRACER 5i handheld XRF and its benchtop M4 TORNADO 2D Micro XRF were both selected as critical equipment for the grant work.

Dr. Molly Hanlon, Project Manager of DEEPER, stated, “XRF technology is being used for the LEADER portion of the grant. The goal of the LEADER work is to connect root depth to leaf elemental accumulations which we’ll measure using the TRACER 5i and the M4 TORNADO.” Dr. Hanlon continued, “We are already studying our target crop, corn, with both analyzers. It’s particularly important to get rapid feedback on the effects of variables on natural samples, essentially living plants, not just on dried plants which have been processed for wet lab sample preparation. We’re very excited about the work we can do with these two analyzers.”

Kimberley Russell, responsible for Bruker’s Portable XRF Business & Market Development in the Food Safety and Agriculture segment stated, “I had the privilege of meeting with the Principal Investigators, Professors Jonathan Lynch and Kathleen M. Brown, along with Molly to discuss their overall research objectives and how Bruker’s XRF analyzers support their dynamic and fundamental work.” According to the grantees, the Department of Energy requests a Tech-to-Market (TTM) advisory committee for this project. Ms. Russell commented, “I look forward to our continued involvement with this project in support of this significant and advanced agricultural application of our XRF analyzers and in representing Bruker on the DEEPER Project TTM Committee.”

Bruker’s new TRACER 5i handheld X-ray fluorescence (XRF) elemental analyzer is more sensitive, flexible and field interactive than legacy TRACERS, while retaining the unique advantages and comprehensive analytical software TRACERS have always been recognized for. The new TRACER 5i incorporates a more powerful tube and detector, an automated filter wheel and a manual filter slot, selectable collimation, Bruker’s patented SharpBeam™ optimized geometry, pressure and temperature compensation, an internal VGA CMOS camera, an interactive touchscreen with point-and-shoot capability, and Wi-Fi & Bluetooth connectivity.

In addition, the TRACER 5i provides added convenience for in-situ use, such as an EasyAccess™ rail mount and the ambidextrous Relaxed Grip Strap™. The TRACER 5i retains the unique ability to use an air, vacuum or helium beam path and interactive control of the measurement excitation conditions for optimized data collection, especially for light elements, such as sodium. The new PC software preserves the TRACER’s comprehensive Artax™ analytical software features for complex materials, but has a more streamlined workflow, and now incorporates EasyCal™ software to provide simple correlation fits for standard materials.

The new TRACER 5i covers a wide range of applications and materials from everyday point-and-shoot testing to the ever-changing complexities of advanced applications and research. Whether it is in art conservation and archaeology, in teaching applications, in food safety and agriculture applications, in energy or mineral exploration, or in electronics materials research — the TRACER 5i can thoroughly and accurately analyze the elemental composition and identify standard or complex materials. The TRACER 5i is capable of analyzing a vast range of sample types, including liquids, slurries, powders, soil, sediment, sludge, cellulose, polymers, paper, solids, metals and alloys.

The new TRACER 5i complements Bruker’s industrially focused line of handheld XRF analyzers, the S1 TITAN series, and is designed for customers who need both point-and-shoot solutions, as well as specialized analysis. Please visit our website for additional information at: www.bruker.com/tracer
