The physiology of skin derives from its structure and composition of its topmost layer, where cells are glued together by lipids. Their composition is influenced by natural conditions, such as age and gender, but also various diseases. Lipotype provided Royal DSM and Lipoid with lipid analysis to investigate the human skin.

The mass spectrometry-based Lipotype Shotgun Skin Lipidomics technology provides the tools to investigate how the healthy skin lipidome is composed, how it changes in diseases or upon intervention with a drug or a cosmetic product. This lipidomic data can be used for cosmetic claim support, topical drug development and personalized cosmetics.

Royal DSM – photodamaged dry facial skin from different ethnic groups

Even though decades of moisturizer development have passed, dry facial skin remains a major concern for consumers. Thus, DSM’s aim was to understand more precisely the underlying biochemistry, particularly of the maturation of the stratum corneum and its relation to facial photodamage, skin pigmentation and ethnicity. In contrast to traditional research of skin analyte composition, a more revolutionary ‘omic’ approach was applied.

Lipotype delivered lipid analysis of the ceramidome, the entirety of ceramides. The results precisely highlight changes in ceramide composition and distribution which help to explain the differences in facial skin barrier function, hydration and stratum corneum maturation, but also the skin care need of the differently pigmented skin types.

Lipoid – skin penetration properties of saturated phospholipids

Lipoid conducted this novel study to investigate skin penetration properties of dermal formulations based on hydrogenated phospholipids. Common to all topically used phospholipids is their ability to interact with skin structures and the similarity to epidermal lipids.

For the first time, the quantitative analysis of both exogenous phospholipids and endogenous skin lipids within a single measurement was demonstrated. The results confirm the properties of hydrogenated phospholipids to penetrate and accumulate in upper epidermal layers.

Lipotype performed lipid analysis of phospholipids of an applied formulation, especially focusing on phosphatidylcholine. Based on these findings, Lipoid will conduct further investigations to improve delivery and fixation of an active pharmaceutical ingredient.

The full customer reference is accessible through Lipotype’s website as well as complimentary material on this research project.
