Shimadzu's New Nexera X2 Ultra High Performance Liquid Chromatograph Series and Photodiode Array Detector Achieve the Ultimate in Analytical Efficiency, and Deliver World-Leading Sensitivity and Superior Core Performance across the Entire HPLC/UHPLC Range


Shimadzu Corporation has completely renewed its Nexera series of ultra high performance liquid chromatographs. Built on the strengths of the Nexera UHPLC, the Nexera X2 is a completely new UHPLC series offering higher core performance as well as new features that improve analytical efficiency for a wider range of HPLC/UHPLC applications.

In addition to the Nexera X2 series, Shimadzu has released the SPD-M30A photodiode array detector, which is ideally suited for the analysis of trace impurities and foreign matter. Its features include (1) the world's highest level spectral resolution, (2) a new i-PDeA ( intelligent Peak Deconvolution Analysis, Patent pending) function that enables peak separation, (3) the world's highest level sensitivity and outstanding separation performance, and (4) superior stability.

Due to its modular design, the Nexera X2 can be easily configured to suit a variety of analytical applications. For example, equipped with the new SPD-M30A and i-PDeA function, the Nexera SR configuration combines high sensitivity and high separation. Additional models include the Nexera Quaternary four-solvent gradient system, which makes it easy to transfer methods from general HPLC systems; the Nexera MP, a front-end UHPLC for all LC/MS platforms that is ideal for high-throughput analysis of multiple samples; and the Nexera Method Scouting configuration, an exhaustive method development system that allows comprehensive method scouting using 96 combinations of mobile phases and columns.

With this flexibility, in combination with new advanced features, the Nexera X2 series is a cutting-edge UHPLC offering both state-of-the-art functionality and the highest performance levels.


Background of Development

In addition to improved detector sensitivity, the need for enhanced peak identification is a significant requirement when analyzing impurities in drugs and food. The new Nexera X2 UHPLC series and SPD-M30A photodiode array detector have been designed to meet market needs in these fields. The SPD-M30A has been developed for the analysis of genotoxic impurities in active pharmaceutical ingredients in accordance with the FDA guidance, and the analysis of hazardous substances or foreign matter in such areas as food safety. The Nexera X2 series not only improves its core sensitivity and separation performance, but also offers a completely new function, i-PDeA, for the ultimate in peak separation and highly reliable analysis.


Product Features

The new SPD-M30A photodiode array detector offers the following features.

(1) World's Highest Level Spectral Resolution

The optimized optics in the SPD-M30A results in the highest spectral resolution levels in the world. Obtaining spectra with this superior spectral resolution means peaks can be integrated more precisely and new functionality based on using those spectra can be included.

(2) i-PDeA Function Fully Separates a Single Peak from Co-Eluted Peaks

The newly developed i-PDeA function is a completely new function that overturns conventional preconceptions about HPLC and UHPLC. It extracts a single peak from co-eluted peaks and quantitates it by exploiting the differences in spectra between each compound. i-PDeA enables users to visualize and detect a minor single impurity even when the impurity is co-eluted with an analyte. In addition, by simply applying a calculation process to the spectrum, i-PDeA reduces the effort required to investigate separation parameters based on experience and provides reliable and accurate quantitative results in a short time.

(3) World's Highest Level Sensitivity and Outstanding Separation Performance

The SPD-M30A adopts a total reflectance capillary flow cell (SR-Cell), a new high-intensity lamp, and optimized signal processing circuits to achieve the world's lowest noise levels of ± 0.2 x 10-5 AU. The SR-Cell maintains superior detection sensitivity while minimizing peak dispersion in the cell to obtain superior peak shapes that maximize peak resolution. Consequently, it achieves a significant improvement in the detection limit.

(4) Outstanding Stability for Ultra Fast Analysis

The SPD-M30A features a TC-Optics (temperature controlled optics) system and a SR-Cell with optimized heat exchange at the cell inlet. These enable quicker baseline stabilization after startup and shorter wait times before analysis, while also providing superior separation performance and sensitivity. The system also provides more reliable analytical results by keeping a stable baseline against shifts in room temperature.
