In January 2011, Shimadzu Corporation established a new R&D Division for analytical and measuring instruments at Shimadzu International Trading (Shanghai) Co., Ltd., our local subsidiary in Shanghai.

The new R&D division serves to strengthen Shimadzu's marketing capabilities in China and provides an organization focused on developing new products tailored to local requirements. The center will focus on developing products designed for mid-range markets, which are expected to experience significant growth in the future.

Though China, now considered a major consumer market, experienced a temporary downturn during the global recession, their economy has since recovered and steadily grown. Currently, Japanese and other foreign manufacturers account for over half the Chinese market for analytical and measuring instruments, which are used for R&D and quality control in a wide array of fields, such as pharmaceuticals, foods, and environmental testing. However, the market has been segregated into high-performance/high-end and mid-level instrument segments, which are generally supplied by foreign manufacturers, and low-end and some mid-level instrument segments, which are generally supplied by domestic Chinese manufacturers. However, as various industrial fields develop and grow, the market for mid-level analytical instruments, which provide core performance levels at an affordable price, has been growing rapidly. This has resulted in increasingly fierce competition with domestic Chinese manufacturers, which have gradually improved their performance and quality levels.
Therefore, we intend to expand our business in China by building our marketing, R&D, and production capabilities targeted to this mid-level instrument segment, the so called "volume zone." This will enable us to introduce even more competitive new products to the marketplace in a timely manner.

At the R&D Division, Shimadzu plans to start by developing new models of our core product lines, namely liquid chromatographs, gas chromatographs, spectroscopy products, and environmental measuring instruments, followed by the development of other products.

Currently, annual sales of such core products in China have reached about 140 million yen (estimate in fiscal 2010). However, by increasing the proportion of these products (chromatographs, spectroscopy products, and environmental measuring instruments) developed by the R&D Center in China to 20 % and further tailoring products to local needs, we plan to double sales to 300 million yen by fiscal 2015.
