> i3 Membrane revolutionizes the separation of biologically active substances with Digital Membrane Chromatography
With the launch of the world’s first adsorber for Digital Membrane Chromatography (DMC), i3 Membrane GmbH opens up entirely new horizons in protein analysis and bioprocess development.
Chromatography is a key technology in biotechnology, particularly in the analysis and production of therapeutic compounds for antibody-based and gene therapies. In this process, biologically active molecules bind to specialized surfaces—such as those with ion exchange or affinity ligands—while unwanted by-products are washed away. To release the valuable proteins, acids and complex additional steps have traditionally been required—albeit with the risk that some of the more sensitive molecules may be damaged.
This is where DMC, developed by i3 Membrane, transforms the process. Instead of acids, a low electrical voltage of up to 2 volts is used to gently release proteins such as monoclonal or bispecific antibodies and ADCs from their surfaces. The method enables rapid yet gentle purification and allows the direct reuse of proteins in the right solution at the push of a button.
“With DMC, we’re taking chromatography to a whole new level and bringing it into the digital age,” says Dr. Stephan Brinke-Seiferth, CEO of i3 Membrane GmbH. “Our first products are not just innovative—they’re true game-changers for everyone working with proteins. Researchers and pharmaceutical companies save time, protect their molecules, and unlock entirely new analytical possibilities.”
The first products available on the market are DMC Adsorbers for small-scale applications. They are particularly suitable for analytical applications, small sample quantities, and screening experiments. Each filter can be cycled multiple times and is easy to clean.
The launch of the DMC filters marks the beginning of a whole range of new products. Additional products for high-throughput applications in research and process engineering are already in development and scheduled for launch in 2026.
